I hope you all had a good summer and the heat did not get to you.

We still have seats available for the trip to Capel Manor Gardens and Vintage Vehicle display for next Sunday 8th September and the Dickensian Christmas Festival at Rochester on Sunday  8th December. Booking forms are available on the information table.  

Many thanks to Pat Manley for leading a guided walk for us on Friday 7th June highlighting the buildings associated with the Great Fire of London.

The Society will be having a stall at the Valence House Local and Family History Fair on Saturday 28th September 10am – 4pm.

Our next talk is on Monday 7th October when members of the East side Community Heritage provide us with an update on their recent activities.

We send our good wishes to Tahlia Coombs who has left her post at Valence House to become archivist to the London Borough of Hackney.

EVENTS

The next Chadwell Heath Historical Society meeting takes place at Wangey Chapel, Wangey Road, Chadwell Heath at 7.30pm on Wednesday 18th  September with a talk by Mark Watson on Henry Glindoni: the Chadwell Heath artist. Visitors welcome £1.50. Telephone 020 8590 4659 for more details.

500 years of counterfeit coins is the subject of a talk by  Gary Oddie to the Friends of Valence House at Valence House Visitors’ Centre on Tuesday 10th September  at 3pm. Visitors £1.50. Telephone 01708 769946 for further details.

The next meeting of the Barking and Dagenham branch of the East of London Family History Society is on Saturday 14th September when Keith Lovell delivers a talk on History through  old Essex advertisements. St. Elizabeth’s Church Hall, Wood Lane, Dagenham. Doors open 1pm and talk starts at 2pm. Visitors welcome.

London Open House is on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd September – as usual many local buildings will be open  for inspection including Valence and Eastbury houses. Programmes are available on the information table.

The Battle of Britain will be remembered in a special event at Eastbury Manor House, Eastbury Square, Barking on Saturday 7th September 10.30am – 3pm. The Royal British Legion  and the Dagenham Girl Pipers are taking part. Telephone 020 8724 1000 for more details.

London’s Pearly Kings and Queens Costermongers’ Harvest Festival Parade and Service takes place on Sunday 29th September 2013 – assemble in Guildhall  Yard, London, EC2 at 1pm. The service is at St. Mary-le-Bow Church, Cheapside at 3pm. All wlecome.

Nicky Scowen is giving a talk at the Valence House Visitor Centre at 2pm on Saturday 19 th October on Searching for the lost boys: the World War One memorial in St. Chad 's Church, Chadwell Heath. 2pm. £3 including refreshments. Telephone 020 8227 2034 for further details.

Barking and Dagenham Archives and Local Studies Centre at Valence House is taking part in the Explore your local archives campaign to promote the value and use of archives supported by the Nation Archives. Drop in and explore the mystery  ‘story box’ from Saturday 16th November.  Telephone 020 8227 2033 for more details.
