MARCH 2014 NOTICES

SOCIETY NEWS

The 4th Chadwell Heath History Fair takes place on April 26th  2014 at St. Chad’s Church Hall, St. Chad’s Road, Chadwell Heath 10am – 4pm. Participants include our own society, the East of London Family History Society, Barking Photographic Society, Newham Bookshop, Newham History Society, Barking  and Dagenham Heritage Service and Ilford Historical Society.

We are also having a stall at the Valentines Mansion May Fair on Saturday 10th May 11am – 4pm. The mansion is situated in Valentines Park just off Emerson Road, Ilford (Gants  Hill).

Our next meeting is on Monday 7th April when Neil Morley delivers an illustrated talk The Victorian City.

The first coach trip of the year is to the Beth Chatto Gardens (am) and Layer Marney Tower (pm) on Sunday 6th April.  Total cost is £21.45 which includes coach and  entrance fees. We still have a number of seats available.

We also have seats available for the Colchester Military Festival on Sunday 6th July and the St. Albans Cathedral Flower Festival on Sunday 28th  September. The trip to Bury St. Edmunds Christmas Fair on Sunday 30 th November is now FULL!


EVENTS

The next Chadwell Heath Historical Society meeting takes place at Wangey Chapel, Wangey Road, Chadwell Heath at 7.30pm on Wednesday 19th  March with a talk by Kathy Lancaster on London Docklands. Visitors welcome £1.50. Telephone 020 8590 4659 for more details.

The 2014 Valence House History Fair takes place on Saturday 30th August 11am – 4pm. Contact telephone number: 020 8227 2034.
Gin and Vice  is the subject of a talk by Eleanor Bloom to the Friends of Valence House at Valence House Visitors’ Centre on Tuesday 11th March at 3pm. Visitors  £1.50. Telephone 01708 769946 for further details.

Janet Seward is the guest speaker at the Newham History Society on Tuesday 11th March . The talk, The two rivers of East London, takes place at 7.45pm  at the Didsbury Centre, Didsbury Close, East Ham, E6 2RX. Non-members £2.

Ilford Historical Society is hosting a talk on Monday 10th March by Janet Seward entitled When our buses went to war. Ilford Hospital Chapel, Ilford Hill,  IG1 2AT. Visitors welcome £2.

Georgina Green will give a talk to the Wanstead Historical Society on Clement Mansfield Ingleby of Valentines: Shakespearian  scholar. Thursday 20th March  8pm at the Churchill Room, Wanstead Library, Spratt Hall Road, Wanstead, E11 2EQ. Visitors welcome £3 per head. 020 8471 1171 for further details.

The next Friends of Valence House Book Sale is on Saturday 12th April at the Visitors’ Centre, Valence House, Becontree Avenue. 10am-3pm. Admission free. 01708  769946 for further details

There is a World War I exhibition at Valence House Museum until 28th June 2014.

On Saturday 8th March at 3pm there is a talk at the Valence House Visitor Centre on Extraordinary women: the role of local women during World War. Free  admission.

Valence is also hosting a Maritime History Afternoon on Saturday 22nd March 2pm-4pm with a talk by Mark Watson on Barking and Dagenham’s fishing and riverside industries.  Free admission.


The annual Marks Gate Day Fair takes place on Saturday 14th June at Marks Gate Junior School, Rose Lane, Chadwell Heath.
