We have three coach trips on offer – Ely Cathedral Flower Festival on Sunday 23rd June, Capel Manor Gardens and Vintage Vehicle display on Sunday 8th  September and the Dickensian Christmas Festival at Rochester on Sunday 8th December. Ely is now fully booked, but we do have a reserve list if you wish to add  your name to it. Booking forms are available on the information table.  

Pat Manley is doing another guided walk for us on Friday 7th June and the theme is The Great Fire of London. No need to book, just turn up! £5 per person. Meet  at Monument Station (Fish Street entrance) 6.30pm.

We had a stall at the Dagenham Community Day last month at the Dagenham and Redbridge Football Club; it was a slow start, but greatly picked up in the afternoon. I would like to thank Richard Chapman and Irene Flitcroft for their invaluable  help at the event.

We do not meet in July or August, but our next meeting is on Monday 2nd September when members of the Handley Page Association will be giving an illustrated talk on Handley  Page: the Barking and Dagenham connection.

EVENTS

The next Chadwell Heath Historical Society meeting takes place at Wangey Chapel, Wangey Road, Chadwell Heath at 7.30pm on Wednesday 15th  May with a talk by Christopher Thompson on the Witch craze in Essex. Visitors welcome £1.50. Telephone 020 8590 4659 for more details.

Famous Victorian women is the subject of a talk by Jef Page to the Friends of Valence House at Valence House Visitors’ Centre on Tuesday14 th May at 2pm.  Visitors £1.50. Telephone 01708 769946 for further details.

The next Friends of Valence House Book Sale is on Saturday 22nd June 10am – 3pm at the Valence House Visitor Centre.

A Day in the life of a Thames tug is the title of a talk by Richard Thomas at the Newham History Society on Tuesday 14th May at 7.45pm. Talks take place at the  Didsbury Centre, Didsbury Close, East Ham. Visitors welcome £2.

The next meeting of the Barking and Dagenham branch of the East of London Family History Society on Saturday 8th June at St.Elisabeth’s Church, Wood, Lane, Dagenham.  Linda Rhodes is the guest speaker – The Dagenham murder: PC George Clark. 2pm.

Bryan Tester of the Barking Photographic Society is organizing a coach trip to the Royal Chatham Dockyard on Saturday 21st September 2013 for the Salute to the 1940s event. Coach will leave Eastbury House, Barking at 9am and Valence Library, Becontree Avenue, Dagenham at 9.15am. Coach: £7.50. Cost of entrance: Adults £11.50. Seniors £10. Child £8.50. The coach will leave Chatham at 5pm. Contact Bryan on  020 8591 1986.
