Congratulations to members Ron Nicholls and Richard Daly who both celebrated landmark birthdays recently. We also wish Richard a long and happy retirement.

We have been asked by Stephen Hill (Barking and Dagenham Council) to let him know the names of people/places we would like to see commemorated in local streets names. Let me know if you have any ideas and I will add them to the list I am compiling.

The coach trips for The Forties Family Day at Bletchley Park on Sunday 27th May, Dickens World at Chatham Maritime on Sunday 16th  September 2012 and Bury St, Edmunds Christmas Fayre on Sunday 25th November 2012 are now full.

Pat Manley’s walk around the Blackfriars area last month was hugely enjoyable – many thanks, Pat.

The winners of our Jubilee Quiz at the Chadwell Heath History Fair were Lily Mead, Pauline Hague and Linda Rhodes.

The 48th AGM of the Essex Archaelogical and Historical Congress takes place on Saturday 26 th May at Lopping  Hall, Loughton. This free event will include A talk Who really saved Epping Forest, a tour of Lopping Hall and a walk in Epping Forest led by Dr Chris Pond, OBE. The event starts at 10am please let me know if you are interested in attending.

Our next meeting is Monday 11th June when, we hope, John Porter will deliver a talk Sporting Heroes of Barking and Dagenham.

EVENTS

Valentine’s Mansion in Valentine’s Park, Ilford is holding its annual May Fair on Saturday 19th  May 11am – 4pm. The Society is now having a stall at this event.  We will also be at Eastbury House on Saturday June 2nd for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebration .

Chadwell Heath Historical Society's next talk is Janet Seward’s Ilford Home Front in the First World War on Wednesday 16th May. Wangey  Chapel, Wangey Road, Chadwell Heath. 7.30pm. Visitors welcome £1.50. Further details 0208 590 4659.

The next meeting of the Barking Branch of the East of London Family History Society is on Saturday 9th June when Keith and Pauline Lovell will be giving a talk History through  Essex Docklands. St.Elizabeth’s Church, Wood Lane, Dagenham, Ripple Road, Barking 2pm. Further details 0208 592 9540.

My Suitcase, my Patience and Him is the title of a talk by Ann Newmeir to be given to the Friends of Valence House at the Valence House Visitors Centre at 2pm on Tuesday 12th  June. Visitors welcome £1.50.  Telephone 01708 769946 for further details. (The AGM will also take place at 2pm).

The next Friends of Valence House book sale takes place on Saturday 30th June in the Valence House Visitors’ Centre. From 10am.

Newham History Society’s next talk is on Tuesday 12th June with Mark Galloway on Royalty and Newham. Didsbury Centre, Didsbury Close, East Ham, E6 2RX. 7.45pm.  Visitors £2.00. The AGM also takes place on that date.

The annual classical concert in the Barking Abbey ruins is on Saturday 2nd June 7.30pm – 10pm. Admission free.

There is to be a Barking Park restoration launch weekend which will take place Saturday 2nd to Monday 4th June  11am-3pm.

Barking beach is back soon! The beach will be in the Town Square, Barking, from Tuesday 24th June to Sunday 2nd  September with lots of activities for your grandchildren!

The Dagenham Town Show is on Saturday 21st July and Sunday 22nd July in Central Park, Dagenham. The Carnival  procession takes place on the Sunday to coincide with the arrival of the Olympic torch.
