SOCIETY NEWS


Our next outing is to the Dickensian Festival and Christmas Market at Rochester on Sunday 8th December. Book with Richard Chapman (01708 867500) if you are interested as only a few  tickets remain.

The Society had a stall at the 100 th anniversary celebrations of Ripple School on 19th September.

Many thanks to Richard Chapman and Pat Manley for helping on our stall at the recent Valence House History Fair; £51 was raised from sales on the day. The Heritage staff is to be congratulated on organising a very successful event. We also had a stall  at the Clubs and Societies Day at the Barking Learning Centre last Thursday. Our next appearance is at the Readers’ Evening at the Dagenham Library, Heathway where we will be selling copies of our newsletter and other publications. October 25 th 2013. 7pm – 9.30pm.

Margaret and Bryan Tester will be at our November and December meetings with a selection of their greeting cards.

Our next talk is on Monday 4th November when our President Bill George will give a talk A walk around Barking.


EVENTS

The next Chadwell Heath Historical Society meeting takes place at Wangey Chapel, Wangey Road, Chadwell Heath at 7.30pm on Wednesday 16th  October with a talk by Martin Lockwood on Dr. Crippen: the story behind the murder of his wife. Pilgrims to America is the subject of a talk by  David Young to the Friends of Valence House at Valence House Visitors’ Centre on Tuesday 8th October at  2pm. Visitors £1.50. Telephone 01708 769946 for further details.


The next film screening at Valence House is on Thursday 24th October 3-4pm. The theme of event is industrial heritage of Barking and Dagenham. Leaflets for other events at Valence House  and Eastbury House are available on the information table.

The next meeting of the Barking and Dagenham branch of the East of London Family History Society is on Saturday 12th October when Colin Chapman delivers a talk on Tracking that  elusive ancestor. St. Elizabeth’s Church Hall, Wood Lane, Dagenham. Doors open 1pm and talk starts at 2pm. Visitors welcome.

Derek Morris is guest speaker at the Newham History Society on 8th October 2013. His talk, Whitechapel 1600-1800, takes place at 7.45pm at the Didsbury Centre, Didsbury  Close, East Ham, E6 2RX. Non-members £2.

Nicky Scowen is giving a talk at the Valence House Visitor Centre at 2pm on Saturday 19th October on Searching for the lost boys: the World War One memorial in St.  Chad’s Church, Chadwell Heath. 2pm. £3 including refreshments. Telephone 020 8227 2034 for further details.

Barking and Dagenham Archives and Local Studies Centre at Valence House is taking part in the Explore your local archives campaign to promote the value and use of archives supported by the Nation Archives. Drop in and explore the mystery  ‘story box’ from Saturday 16th November.  Telephone 020 8227 2033 for more details.
