George John Smith (1943-2010)

George Smith, who was born in Scotland, sadly lost his long battle against stomach cancer. Members may remember George’s talk about Crime and Punishment in the Victorian Era to the Society in February 2010. George had served on our Committee and was a great supporter of local history and family history societies. He played a leading part in the East of London Family History Society and organised several highly successful fairs. George was very active in the Barking Branch of the Society and helped revitalise the Newham Branch. He took up the profession of Genealogist several years ago following a serious car accident. Our condolences go to his children and partners. Several members attended his funeral and burial at Hainault on 7th May 2010.
