Richard Chapman is recovering from his hip operation and has been staying with family in Braintree. There is a get well card on the information table for members to sign.

We have three coach trips booked; Thriplow Daffodil Weekend on Sunday 22nd March, Tiptree Jam Museum and Ingatestone Hall on 7th  June and Bletchley Park on 6 th September. Please telephone Richard Chapman on 01708 867500 for further information.

Our next meeting is on Monday 13th April when there will be a presentation Barking and Dagenham: 50 years on. Katie Avagah and I will be looking  at the relationship between Barking and its neighbour Dagenham through the eyes of the local press.

Thursday 5th March Valence House Masterclass; as part  of International Women’s Week, Clare Sexton will be talking about the women who worked in munitions at the Sterling factory in Dagenham. 2pm – 3pm. Valence House Museum. Becontree Avenue, Dagenham.  Further details telephone 020 8227 2034.

Saturday 7th March. Essex Congress History Symposium. Christchurch, Chelmsford 10am – 4.30pm. The theme is transport in Essex.  Details available on the information table.

Monday 9th March Talk: Child in wartime: evacuation, the bombing of Coventry, the Blitz and Doodlebugs, by Canon  John B. Barnes. 7.30 – 9.30pm. Ilford Historical Society. 7.30pm  at the Ilford Hospital Chapel, The Broadway, Ilford Hill, Ilford, IG1 2AT. Non-members £2.

Tuesday 10th March Talk: In the beginning: Newham, by Kathy Taylor. Newham History Society 7.45pm. Conservative  Club, Vicarage Lane, E6. Non-members welcome £2.

Saturday 14th March
Talk: The blackest streets, by Sarah Wise . East of London Family History Barking branch. 2pm at St. Elisabeth Church Hall,  Wood Lane, Dagenham, Visitors welcome.

Tuesday 17th March Talk: The Fanshawe paintings and their conservation,  by Leeanne Westwood. Friends of Valence  House, Visitor Centre, Becontree Avenue. 3pm. Members free, visitors £1.50.

Wednesday 18th March  Talk: Rudyard Kipling’s Kim’s footsteps, by Doreen Tayler. Chadwell Heath Historical  Society. Wangey Chapel, Wangey Road, Chadwell Heath at 7.30pm. Visitors welcome £1.50. Telephone 020 8590 4659 for more details.
