Part of Dagenham’s Civic Centre is to be contracted out to the University of Coventry to provide apprenticeships and degree courses  for local residents.

The Coopers Arms in Chadwell Heath is the latest of the borough’s pubs to close its doors. There has been a pub on the site since the 1820s. The White Horse in Barking was demolished last month.

A new book entitled the Wands of Barking will be on sale at the May meeting priced £5.

We also have some USB sticks for sale at the bargain price of £7.

Valence House has a new website which now includes a searchable database of the 30,000+ materials stored in both the museum and Local Studies Centre. Visit www.valencehousecollections.co.uk

Our next meeting takes place on Monday 6th
June when Georgina Green makes a welcome return to the society with a talk entitled Trees in History.

We have three new coach trips planned – Brighton on 15th May, the Essex Country Show on 11th September  and Ipswich Christmas Market on 11th December. Book at the monthly meeting or telephone Richard Chapman on 01708 867500.

Good luck to members Margaret and Ron Nicholls following their recent move from Barking to Rainham.

Our good wishes are also sent to Doug Simpkins following his recent operation.

Pat Manley has arranged to take members on a tour of St. Margaret’s Church, Barking on Thursday 9th June (10am for 10.30). It will be followed by a tour of the abbey grounds  by Tom Cromwell. All welcome.
