We have three coach trips on offer – Ely Cathedral Flower Festival on Sunday 23rd June, Capel Manor Gardens and Vintage Vehicle display on Sunday 8th  September and the Dickensian Christmas Festival at Rochester on Sunday 8th December. Ely is now fully booked, but we do have a reserve list if you wish to add  your name to it. Booking forms are available on the information table.  

Pat Manley is doing another guided walk for us on Friday 7th June and the theme is The Great Fire of London. No need to book, just turn up! £5 per person. Meet  at Monument Station (Fish Street entrance) 6.30pm.

The 3rd Chadwell Heath History Fair will take place at Wangey Chapel, Wangey Road, Chadwell Heath on Saturday 13th  April 2013. 10 – 4.
Admission free. We will have a stall at this event.

The Society is having a stall at the Barking and Dagenham Voluntary and Community Sector Open Day on Thursday 25th April 2013 at the Vicarage Field Shopping Centre, Barking 10am- 4pm. This is a very big event and any help on the day will be gratefully received.

Last month I attended the Five Lakes Travel and Tourism Show near Maldon on behalf of the Society – I entered a competition and won an hour on a combine harvester; needless to say I will not be taking up the prize!

Our next meeting is on Monday 13th May when the Annual General Meeting takes place followed by Members’ Working Lives (part 2).

The Barking Registry Office in Barking closed in March and has moved to the Grade II listed Woodlands House in Rainham Road North, Dagenham.

Vestry House Museum has donated a copy of O’Leary’s book Dagenham Place Names to the Society; it is available for inspection on the information table.

The annual May Fair takes place at Valentine’s Mansion, Valentine’s Park, Ilford 11am – 4pm on Saturday 11 th May. We will be  having a stall at this event.

EVENTS

The next Chadwell Heath Historical Society meeting takes place at Wangey Chapel, Wangey Road, Chadwell Heath at 7.30pm on Wednesday 17th  April with a talk by Peter Gwilliam on the History of Chadwell Heath. Visitors welcome £1.50. Telephone 020 8590 4659 for more details.

Taking the Waters
is the subject of a talk by Georgina Green to the Friends of Valence House at Valence House Visitors’ Centre on Tuesday 9th April at 2pm. Visitors  £1.50. Telephone 01708 769946 for further details.

The next Friends of Valence House Book Sale is on Saturday 13th April 10am – 3pm at the Valence House Visitor Centre.

The Ilford and District Historical Society’s next talk is Barking Abbey, by Jef Page on Monday 13th May at 7.30pm at Ilford Hospital Chapel, The Broadway, Ilford Hill. Visitors  welcome £2.00. Telephone 07762 514238 for further details.

Coffee Houses to Costas is the title of a talk by Marlene McAndrew at the Newham History Society on Tuesday 16th April at 7.45pm. Talks take place at the Didsbury  Centre, Didsbury Close, East Ham. Visitors welcome £2.

The next meeting of the Barking and Dagenham branch of the East of London Family History Society is a Help and Research Day on Saturday 13th April at St.Elisabeth’s Church, Wood,  Lane, Dagenham. 2pm.

There is a Havering Heritage Day on Sunday 21st April at the Old Chapel, Upminster, St. Mary’s Lane 2-5pm. Barking and Dagenham Heritage staff will be at this event in period  costume. Free entry.
