NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING; The AGM WILL TAKE PLACE ON MONDAY 12th MAY AT 7.45PM. IF YOU  WOULD LIKE TO NOMINATE ANYONE OR STAND FOR ANY OF THE COMMITTEE POSTS PLEASE LET ME KNOW BEFOREHAND OR ON THE DAY.


The 4th Chadwell Heath History Fair takes place on April 26th  2014 at St. Chad’s Church Hall, St. Chad’s Road, Chadwell Heath 10am – 4pm. Participants include our own society, the East of London Family History Society, Barking Photographic Society, Newham Bookshop, Newham History Society, Barking  and Dagenham Heritage Service and Ilford Historical Society. A number of local authors will also be attending. June Johnson’s bread pudding will be much in demand!

We are also having a stall at the Valentines Mansion May Fair on Saturday 10th May 11am – 4pm. The mansion is situated in Valentines Park just off Emerson Road, Ilford (Gants  Hill).

Our next meeting is on Monday 12th May when the Annual General Meeting takes place followed by Dagenham and Chadwell Heath from old postcards, an illustrated  presentation.

We still have seats available for the Colchester Military Festival on Sunday 6th July and the St. Albans Cathedral Flower Festival on Sunday 28th  September. The trip to Bury St. Edmunds Christmas Fair on Sunday 30th November is now FULL!

Helen Spencer is organizing another mock evacuation of Barking and Dagenham schools from 3 rd to 6th  June. The destination will probably be Upminster – if you are able to help on any of the days please let me or Helen know.

Helen also wants memories of the Dagenham Town Show and photographs from its later years (1970s onwards) for a project she is doing with a local school. Contact Helen on 07585401967 or email

EVENTS

The next Chadwell Heath Historical Society meeting takes place at Wangey Chapel, Wangey Road, Chadwell Heath at 7.30pm on Wednesday April 16th  with a talk by Christine Wagg on Life and legacy of George Peabody. Visitors welcome £1.50. Telephone 020 8590 4659 for more details.

Christopher Thompson is the guest speaker at the Newham History Society on Tuesday 8th April. The talk, The witch craze in Essex, takes place at 7.45pm  at the Didsbury Centre, Didsbury Close, East Ham, E6 2RX. Non-members £2.

The next Friends of Valence House Book Sale is on Saturday 12th April at the Visitors’ Centre, Valence House, Becontree Avenue. 10am-3pm. Admission free. 01708 769946  for further details.

Ilford Historical Society is hosting a talk on Monday 14th April by Georgina Green  called Clement Ingleby of Valentines and Shakespeare.  Ilford Hospital  Chapel, Ilford Hill, IG1 2AT. Visitors welcome £2.

The annual Marks Gate Day Fair takes place on Saturday 14th June at Marks Gate Junior School, Rose Lane, Chadwell Heath.

There is a World War I exhibition at Valence House Museum until 28th June 2014.

Gin and Vice  is the subject of a talk by Eleanor Bloom to the Friends of Valence House at Valence House Visitors’ Centre on Tuesday 11th March at 3pm. Visitors  £1.50. Telephone 01708 769946 for further details.

Coming soon from Valence House! A new CD-ROM is in preparation titled Barking Ancestors: Rippleside cemetery 1886-1902. St. Margaret’s churchyard and monumental inscriptions and Barking 100 years ago by Herbert Hope Lockwood. Price  £5.
