SOCIETY NEWS

Welcome to the 2012/13 season. I hope you had a good summer.

Richard Chapman is now taking bookings for a coach trip to the Thriplow Daffodil Weekend on Sunday 17th March 2013. We do not have the final cost yet, but it will be approx. £14.  Book early as places our sure to go quickly.  Telephone 01708 867500.

We still have a few tickets available for the trip to Dickens World at Chatham Maritime on Sunday 16th September 2012, but Bury St, Edmunds Christmas Fayre on Sunday 25 th November 2012 is now full.

Bill George and I recently visited Dorothy Lockwood (Vice-President) at her home in Great Baddow. Dorothy has kindly donated a cheque to the society for the purchase raffle prizes. She also sends her regards to all members of the society.

Our next meeting is on Monday 1 st October when Jonathan Caton will give an illustrated talk Thurrock: an unusual and strange history.

EVENTS

On Sunday 9th September there will be an historic walk of Barking Park starting at the Lodge House at 12noon.  It will be followed by a screening of the film The People’s Park and an exhibition of historical photographs in the Visitors’ Centre.

Chadwell Heath Historical Society's next meeting is on Wednesday 19th September when Mark Watson will be giving a talk on the History of Marks Gate. Wangey Chapel, Wangey Road, Chadwell Heath. 7.30pm. Further details 0208 590 4659. Visitors welcome £1.50.

The next meeting of the Barking Branch of the East of London Family History Society is on Saturday 8th September when Audrey Gillett will deliver a talk Truths, half truths  and nothing like the truths. St.Elizabeth’s Church, Wood Lane, Dagenham at 2pm. Further details 0208 592 9540.

New York, New York is the title of a talk by Ann Hardy to be given to the Friends of Valence House at the Valence House Visitors Centre at 2pm on Tuesday 11th  September. Visitors welcome £1.50.  Telephone 01708 769946 for further details.

The Valence House Local and Family History Fair will take place on Saturday 15th September 10am – 4pm. A very special day has been planned with stalls, talks and entertainment  by the Dagenham Girl Pipers. Leaflets are available on the information table.

The next Friends of Valence House book sales take place on Saturday 22nd and 23rd September as part of  London Open House in the Valence House Visitors’ Centre, Becontree Avenue, Dagenham. From 10am. Telephone 020 8227 2014 for more details.

The People’s Museum and Gallery of Newham recently opened at 306, High Road, Straford, London, E15 1AJ. DLR station Stratford High Street.  No further details available at present.

There will be a charity tabletop sale in aid of St. Francis Hospice and the Barking and Dagenham Talking Newspaper on Saturday 22nd
September at the Wangey Chapel, Wangey Road, Chadwell  Heath. 10am – 4pm. Admission free. Telephone 020 8597 7210 for more details.

Sir Charles Raymond and his Valentines….is the subject of a talk by Georgina Green to the Ilford and District Historical Society on Monday 10th September 2012  at the Ilford Hospital Chapel, The Broadway, Ilford Hill. Visitors welcome £2.00. Telephone 07762 514238.

The open days for the Upminster Windmill in St. Mary’s Lane, Upminster are 15th and 16th September and 22nd and 23rd September. 2pm – 5pm.
