SOCIETY NEWS

This is our final meeting of the current season and we return on Monday 1st September when we launch our  80th anniversary season with a brief talk by Bill George on artist Frank Tingey. Bill will also launch a booklet he has compiled highlighting Frank’s work. It will be followed  by a buffet and wine for members and invited guests.

We still have seats available for the Colchester Military Festival on Sunday 6th July and the St. Albans Cathedral Flower Festival on Sunday 28th  September. The trip to Bury St. Edmunds Christmas Fair on Sunday 30th November is now FULL!

Some of our members are taking part in the mock evacuation of local schoolchildren to Upminster Old Chapel on Tuesday 3rd June and Thursday 5th  June. If you are interested in coming along please see me after the meeting.

St. Margaret’s Church, Barking and St. Mary’s, Grafton Road are launching projects aimed at providing interactive media displays and events  in an effort to highlight the history and architecture of both buildings. Watch this space for further  details.

Tuesday 10th June. AGM+Our memories: members’ recollections. Newham History Society. 7.45pm at the Didsbury Centre, Didsbury Close, East Ham, E6 2RX. Non-members  £2.

Saturday 14th June. Talk: East End regiments in World War I, by Tom Thorpe. East of London Family History Barking branch. 2pm at St. Elisabeth Church Hall, Wood Lane,  Dagenham, Visitors welcome.

Wednesday 18th June AGM followed by talk: What is under our feet: Essex earthquakes,volcanoes and glaciers, by Bill George. Chadwell Heath Historical  Society. Wangey Chapel, Wangey Road, Chadwell Heath at 7.30pm. Visitors welcome £1.50. Telephone 020 8590 4659 for more details.

Saturday 14th June. Marks Gate Day Fair at Marks Gate Junior School, Rose Lane, Chadwell Heath.

Sunday 22nd June. Classic cars display, Upminster Windmill, St. Mary’s Lane, Upminster. 2pm – 5pm. Further details 0300 030 1803.

Saturday 28th June. Armed Forces Day at Valence House – famous Home Front bus, Dagenham Girl Pipers, Barking Adult College band, Polka Dots (Andrews’ sister tribute group)  and Yeomanry Band, 11am – 4pm.

Saturday 19th July. Friends of Valence House Book Sale at the Visitors’ Centre, Valence House, Becontree Avenue.  10am-3pm. Admission free. 01708 769946 for further details

Tuesday 19th August. Valence House Garden Party; fun and entertainment for all the family. 6pm – 8.30pm.

Saturday 20th September – London Open House – Valence House 10am – 3pm. Includes Friends’ bookstall.
