The Barking Creek barrier, an impressive twin-towered 180ft high structure with a central gate to close the main navigation channel to the creek and three smaller tidal gates.

Designed by Binnie & Partners, it was built by French Kier Construction and made in Sheffield by Newton Chambers Engineering.

This was the first phase of the £727 million Thames Tidal Flood Protection Scheme.

The main Thames Barrier, opened early in 1983, is at Silvertown, Woolwich.
