OCTOBER 2012 NOTICES

SOCIETY NEWS

Helen Spencer, recently appointed by English Heritage as Local Heritage Education Manager (Barking and Dagenham) was present at our last meeting; this evening Helen will give  a short presentation on her role before the start of Jonathan’s talk.

Bill George, our esteemed President, was featured in the Barking and Dagenham Post on September 12th in a full page article based on last month’s talk to the Society Images of old Barking. A copy is on the information table if you missed it.

The coach trip to Dickens World was very enjoyable although there was some disappointment that the river tour of the site was not available, but we had great fun in the Victorian classroom where a number of our members were forced to sit  in the corner wearing dunces caps. Many thanks to Richard for arranging this.

Richard Chapman is now taking bookings for a coach trip to the Thriplow Daffodil Weekend on Sunday 17th March 2013. Coach £9.00+£4 entrance fee. Book with Richard this evening  or telephone 01708 867500.

The Society had a stall at the hugely successful Local and Family History Fair at Valence House on Saturday 15th September; even the Mayor stopped by to purchase a book from us. Many  thanks to Pat Manley, Richard Chapman and June Johnson for their help in welcoming visitors.

Our next meeting is on Monday 5th November when Linda Rhodes will deliver an illustrated talk Scandals at sea: sad tales of the Barking fishing apprentices.
